Protect Your Account

Target® Security Breach

As you may know, Target announced an unauthorized breach of its card payment systems that may have compromised the personal information of customers who used their credit cards, debit cards or prepaid cards at Target stores in the U.S between November 27th and December 15th, 2013. Most recently, Target learned information compromised included card data as well as personal information such as your name, mailing address, phone number or email address.

To protect your personal information, Target is now offering one year of free credit monitoring to all Target customers who shopped in U.S. stores through Experian’s® ProtectMyID® product, which includes identity theft insurance where available. To receive your unique activation code for the service, you will need to go to creditmonitoring.target.com and register before April 23, 2014. Activation codes must be redeemed by April 30, 2014.

For your peace of mind, please know that HeritageBank of the South protects you against verified unauthorized charges on your account. We have isolated a list of customers whose cards were compromised and they will be sent additional instructions. Please know we are closely monitoring card activity 24 hours a day to identify unusual transactions and help prevent unauthorized charges. Unless you have seen suspicious activity or unauthorized charges on your account, you should continue using your card as normal. If you notice any suspicious activity or unauthorized transactions, contact HeritageBank of the South’s customer service center by calling 1-800-227-7989, ext. 3200.

Best Practices to Protect Yourself Against Unauthorized Account Use

  • Regularly review activity on your account using HeritageBank of the South’s FREE online banking or mobile banking. Also, review your statements and reconcile your account register monthly.
  • If you notice any suspicious activity or unauthorized transactions, contact HeritageBank of the South’s customer service center by calling 1-800-227-7989, ext. 3200. Or, visit your local branch for assistance.
  • Schedule an automatic alert to notify you if your balance falls below a certain amount. From your online banking home page, select the appropriate account.
Choose the “Options” tab, and select the “Alerts” tab. Choose the “Balance” option and complete the appropriate fields.

Credit vs Debit- Which should I choose?

If you are using a HeritageBank of the South debit card, you’ll notice the Visa® logo co-branded on your card. This gives you the option to choose “credit” or “debit” when making a purchase with your debit card.

  • Credit- By choosing the credit option, you’re taking advantage of the VISA® network. This means you are covered under VISA’s Zero Liability policy, which goes beyond federal standards making you responsible for up to $50 if your card is used illegally.
  • Debit- When you select the debit option, you’re asked for a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Should your PIN get stolen and your card used fraudulently, you have 2 business days to file a report or you could be liable for up to $500.
