Our History

For the past 55 years, HeritageBank of the South has built a rich history in Southwest Georgia. Since opening our doors in 1955 as AGE Credit Union, we have been blessed with substantial growth, expanding into new markets in Georgia, Florida and Alabama. 

Our first venture outside our hometown of Albany was in 2008 when we joined the Ocala, Florida, community. The following year, we acquired The Tattnall Bank, expanding into East Georgia and opening eight additional branches in the area. Our next acquisitions of Citizens Bank of Effingham and First Southern National Bank resulted in five branch openings. We then expanded into Alabama, purchasing several branches in Birmingham and Auburn. 

Currently, HeritageBank of the South serves its market areas through 27 full-service branch locations, 14 mortgage offices and 4 investment offices. Despite our growth, we haven’t lost sight of our mission. We are a hometown bank serving hometown communities. And, we will continue to grow in the best interest of our customers and shareholders.

1955 l AGE Credit Union opens at the Marine Corps Logistics
          Base in Albany, Georgia

2001 l Converts to a savings bank

2002 l Forms Heritage Financial Group

2005 l Heritage Financial completes first public stock offering

2006 l Opens a temporary branch in Ocala, Florida, before opening two  
          permanent branches in 2008

2009 l Purchases branches in Lake City, Florida, Reidsville and 
          Collins, Georgia

2010 l Purchases branches in Statesboro (2), Adel, 
           Hazlehurst and Baxley, Georgia

2011 l Purchases branches in Springfield, Guyton, Port Wentworth
           and Rincon, Georgia. Acquires a third location in Statesboro.

2012 l Purchases branches in Auburn, Alabama, and Macon, Georgia

2013 l Opens a branch in Valdosta, Georgia; purchases branches from 
          FDIC in Chelsea, Childersburg, Pelham, Payton, Sylacauga, and 
          Valley, Alabama, and LaGrange, Georgia

 

Our Community

At HeritageBank of the South, our strength is built on the communities we serve. Sponsorships, donations and volunteerism are several ways we support our communities. However, we take the most pride in providing our own creative and educational events to enrich and enhance the lives of our customers and community.

Shred-A-Thon

Every year, 10 million Americans become victims of identity theft, the most prevalent, fastest growing crime in the nation. The reason— personal information is easy to obtain and identity thieves are difficult to catch. Fortunately, identity theft can be prevented by shredding your personal documents. Each spring, HeritageBank of the South teams with local shredding companies, ShredEx and UltraShred Technologies, to offer a free day of shredding for each of our communities. Everyone is invited to bring paper documents such as tax records and bank statements, which will be shredded on the spot by professionals. It’s our way of providing a much needed community service as well as educating our customers on the prevalence of identity theft.
 

Teach Children to Save

At HeritageBank, we know learning goes past the classroom. In coordination with the American Bankers Association, HeritageBank has joined the battle for financial literacy. We believe it is our duty to help children and parents become more fiscally responsible. For the past three years, we have sponsored “Teach Kids to Save Day” at area elementary schools. Our curriculum teaches vital saving skills. Each child receives a ceramic piggy bank to personalize and design. Our belief is the lesson in saving rings more true when children have a tangible connection to the concept. Community response has been tremendous. Each year more schools request to be included. More than 2,000 to date have participated.

HeritageBank's Annual Community Shred-A-Thon

April 12, 2014, 9AM-12PM. Open to the public, the Shred-A-Thon is a free service for our communities. Events will be held at the following branch locations:

  • Albany, GA (Main office on Westover Blvd.)
  • Rincon, GA
  • Valdosta, GA
  • Chelsea, AL
HeritageBank's Annual College Scholarships 

HeritageBank of the South is pleased to offer scholarship opportunities for students living within the Bank’s service areas. A total of six scholarships valued at $1,000 each will be awarded – one per region and one to a dependent of a HeritageBank of the South team member.
